Halloween is round the corner and so I’ve decided to share 5 Halloween activities that really work for all ages and levels.
Activity 1 – Halloween higher or lower
To do this activity you’re going to need:
- a glass jar or transparent plastic bottle
- a lot of Halloween sweets!
Place all the sweets inside the jar AFTER you have counted all the sweets. If you don’t feel like counting then come up with a ball park figure. On the board write the words higher and lower and separate them in a table as below:
Show your students the jar or bottle and ask them to guess how many sweets there are in total. For each number they say, write it in either higher or lower depending on if the correct total is higher or lower than that number.
Keep electing students to say numbers until one student either gets close enough or the time limit is up (set a time limit!). In this activity, students practice saying numbers, especially long ones!
Activity 2 – Trick or treat
Review the concept of tricking and treating with your students. Put the students into pairs and ask them to draw a haunted house on a piece of paper. Once they’re done, fold the paper and prop it up at each pairs’ desk.
Students in the same pairs now take it in turns to ‘visit’ the other houses in the ‘neighbourhood’. When a student ‘arrives’ at a house, the pair at the desks pretend to be the home owners and the role play begins.
Ensure students are familiar with the interaction pattern of a person visiting a house to trick and treat before allowing them to roleplay. Remember, students don’t have to give treats and can also ask for a ‘trick’!

Activity 3 – Roll a monster
In this activity designed for children, students build a monster at random. The dice make this activity fun and unpredictable and lead to some very strange results. I like this activity as it reviews vocabulary that students recognise but with a scary twist.

One of the key areas in learning about any holiday season is the associated vocabulary. Bingo is a great way of reviewing not only it’s written form but also how it is pronounced as the teacher calls it out. It’s such a versatile activity that it can be used with all ages and all levels. The bingo sheets, description cards and blank cards can all be found in my activity pack.
