Welcome back to Charlie’s Lessons! In this blog post, we’ll be summarizing five FUN speaking activities that are also green shared by Charlie and Harry from Renewable English. These activities are designed to promote environmental awareness while keeping your students engaged and active.
Let’s dive into the highlights of each activity:
1. Environmental Board Races:
Objective: Encourages creativity and vocabulary building.
How it works: Write a word related to the environment (e.g., “environment”) on the board twice. Students then generate a new word for each letter.
Variations: Assign points based on word length, fostering the use of suffixes and plurals.
2. Snowballs:
Objective: Promotes recycling and discussion.
How it works: Students write environmental actions on scrap paper, crumple them into snowballs, and throw them at the teacher. Upon picking up a snowball, they discuss the written action with classmates.
Benefits: A fun way to reuse scrap paper and encourage conversations about eco-friendly habits.
3. Higher or Lower:
Objective: Raises awareness about resource consumption.
How it works: Guess the quantity of a resource required for a specific task, such as the amount of water to produce one liter of cow’s milk. The game involves guessing higher or lower until the correct answer is reached.
Insight: Promotes critical thinking about resource usage and its environmental impact.

4. Would You Rather with an Eco Twist:
Objective: Engages students in decision-making related to environmental choices.
How it works: Pose “Would You Rather” questions related to eco-friendly decisions, like giving up meat or milk. Students express their preferences and discuss their reasoning.
Benefits: Encourages thoughtful consideration of personal environmental choices.
5. Debate or Discussion Time:
Objective: Develops critical thinking and communication skills through debating environmental issues.
How it works: Split the class into two teams to debate topics like whether single-use plastics are a problem. Encourage students to argue for positions they may not personally endorse to broaden their perspectives.
Key Takeaway: Enhances critical thinking and encourages empathy towards opposing viewpoints.
Incorporating these activities into your classroom not only makes learning fun but also instills a sense of responsibility towards the environment.
