What Makes NotebookLM Different?
You are probably familiar with tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, which pull information from all over the internet. NotebookLM is different. It only gives you information from the sources that you provide. It does not pull outside information, making it a highly controlled and reliable environment for your specific lesson materials.
Is it free? Yes. The plan that is most relevant and useful for teachers is completely free to use.
Getting Started and Adding Sources
When you first reach the NotebookLM homepage, there is a crucial setting to note: “Output Language”. If you teach a foreign language or want to do a project in a language other than English, you can change the output language in the top right corner before you begin.
To start, you will create a new notebook. The first thing the platform will ask for is your sources. This is the core of NotebookLM. You can upload:

For this example, I used a single PDF source: the children’s story, “Jack and the Beanstalk”.
Note: On the free plan, there is a 50-source limit per notebook. Ideally, you want to add as many relevant sources as possible so the AI’s answers are highly reliable.
The Chat Interface
Once your source is uploaded, the main chat interface provides a brief summary of the text and offers suggested questions. From there, you can start typing questions about anything you or your students might want to know more about regarding the material.
The Studio: Powerful Features for the Classroom
The real magic happens in the “Studio” section, which offers several incredible tools generated directly from your uploaded sources.
1. The Audio Overview (Podcast Mode)
This is arguably the most famous feature of NotebookLM. It creates an audio overview—essentially a podcast—between two AI hosts discussing the information in your sources.
The voices sound incredibly natural. They pause, interrupt each other, and take turns. For students, especially English Language Learners (ESL), this provides excellent listening practice focused exactly on the topic they need to study. Once generated, this audio can easily be downloaded and shared.
2. Interactive Audio Conversations
The Audio Overview gets even better. There is a “Join” feature that allows you to actually step into the podcast. You can interrupt the hosts, say hello, and ask them specific questions (e.g., “Could you compare Jack to any personality in the current time?”).
This is brilliant for students. They transition from just listening to actively speaking. Because they are interacting with an AI, they are organically tested on their pronunciation and grammar—they have to make a real effort to be clear and understood by the hosts!
3. Video Overviews
NotebookLM can also generate a video overview. It features a continuous voiceover discussing the topic, paired with images that change roughly every 10 seconds. While the video isn’t fully animated, it is a great multimedia addition that can also be downloaded directly to your device.
4. Study Tools: Flashcards and Quizzes
To help students grasp the material, the tool automatically generates:

Quizzes: It can auto-generate a 10-question multiple-choice quiz based purely on your uploaded sources.
5. Visuals: Infographics and Slide Decks
For your visual learners, NotebookLM is incredibly helpful.

Infographics: It creates visually appealing graphics with perfect text that follow the key events of your source material. These can be downloaded as images.

Slide Decks: It can generate a full presentation (e.g., 15 slides covering key events in the story) which is easy for you to manage and can form the perfect basis for your lesson plan.
6. Reports and Study Guides
Finally, the platform can generate comprehensive text documents:

You can easily copy this text into a Word or Google Doc to print and hand out in class.
Sharing With Your Students
Sharing your Notebook with students is simple. You just enter their email addresses or create a shareable link.

The Main Drawback
The one significant limitation to be aware of is the lack of tracking. Currently, you cannot see whether your students have actually used the materials, listened to the audio review, or taken the quizzes. The only way to know is to ask them directly!
