Do you want to play quizzes in your classroom, but your students don’t have mobile phones? Well, don’t worry because we’re taking a look at Quizizz’s new feature, Paper Mode. This means you’re going to be able to play all of the games on Quizizz without your students ever needing a mobile phone.
So this new feature in Quizizz is going to be a lifesaver, as we know, children don’t have mobile phones. Well, they shouldn’t have anyway. And obviously, we can play games like Quizizz, Kahoot, and all the others with teenagers and adults, but with children, we’ve always had to be a bit more creative until now.
Wondering what the difference between Kahoot and Quizizz is? Check out my post here.
Getting started with Paper Mode
So the first thing you need to do is make a Quizizz account. This is really simple; just go to the Quizizz home page and go to sign up. You can even use your own Google account. We’re going to look at the library of content that we can use straight away in class. So all you need to do is to find a quiz that’s going to be suitable for your class. When you go to play, you’re going to have now three options, and option number three is called Paper Mode.
Install Quizizz Android app
Before you click to play Paper mode, make sure that you’ve installed the Quizizz app on your phone. For Android users, go straight to the Play Store and search for Quizizz and download the app. Very important, log into the mobile app with the same account you’re using on the Quizizz site.
How to play Quizizz Paper Mode: Step by Step
So you’ve got your account created on Quizizz; you’ve found the quiz that you want to play with your students, and you’ve installed the Quizizz app. What’s next?
The final and most important piece of the puzzle is to get your Quizizz cards. All you need to do is go back to the quiz, press play Paper mode, and follow the instructions to print your cue cards. The way the cue cards work is that on each card, there is the player’s number, so P1, P2, P3, etc. And depending on how you show the card, you will be choosing option A, B, C, or D. I would recommend laminating the cards so that they can last longer.
So you’ve printed your cue cards; you’ve got the app on your phone, and the quiz is now ready.
- You’re going to click Paper Mode; you’re going to click play, and it’s going to ask you to log into the app and also start the paper mode from your mobile phone.
- Your students will see the first question being presented on the screen and the options. Students will read the question and choose an answer.
- They will then show their cue card in the right direction of the answer they would like to choose.
- You are then going to choose on the app to scan the answers. When you press that, the camera will open, and you’ll begin scanning all of the students’ answers.
- The process is very quick, and you can pick up on multiple players at the same time. Once you’ve scanned all the answers, all you need to do is press submit. The results of that question will be presented to all students on the screen, and you’ll be able to see who got the question right and who got it wrong.
Leveraging Quizizz Reports
Once you’ve finished the Quizizz, then you’ll be able to get access to Quizizz’s amazing reports. The way I’ve been using this in my class is to do reviews at the beginning or the end of the class and even to test my students on a unit of the course book we’re using. If you’re going to be using this new feature with children, I would suggest printing the cue cards and allowing your students to decorate their own card. That way, it becomes a bit more personal for the students.
Not only can you get your students to decorate the cards, but you can also assign the actual names of your students to each card. So instead of appearing as player one, player 2, player 3, the actual names of your students will appear during the quiz. To do this before you start the game is to make sure you assign the student names, which appears below the options.
Thank you for reading about Quizizz’s new feature, Paper Mode, and I hope this proves to be a useful tool for you in the English language classroom.
