How to use Canva’s NEW whiteboard

Hello, welcome back to another post! This time we’re taking a look at Canva’s new whiteboard.

Space for Creativity

Canva is one of the most popular design tools out there, and not only will it be useful for you as a teacher with your students, but also useful for your students if they ever need to make business cards, flyers, menus, invitations, or anything for social media. So, let’s go take a look at how we use Canva’s new whiteboard.

Boundless Canvas

The first feature I want to focus on with Canva’s new whiteboard is the fact that it has infinite space. So, with a regular whiteboard, obviously, there are the sides, and you can’t go past those. But with a Canva whiteboard, it is infinite, so there are no boundaries at all. So, if you’re working on a whiteboard with your students and you’re running out of space, all you need to do is zoom out, and you can zip all the way to the other end. You can take objects and pull them all the way to the other end of the whiteboard, and so there are no limits, and this solves one of the biggest problems with whiteboards.

Another whiteboard that offers this infinite space feature is Zoom’s new whiteboard. I wrote a post on that whiteboard just here.

Ready-Made Templates

The second feature I want to focus on is Canva templates. Now, Canva offers templates for all kinds of documents and publications. For example, menus or social media posts, and whiteboards are no different. All you need to do is go to templates and click on whiteboard, and there are templates such as mind maps, voting boards, to-do lists, and many more, and these can be adapted for the classroom.

Specialized Elements

The third feature I want to look at are Canva’s exclusive elements for whiteboard. Now, when you make any design on Canva, on the left-hand side, you should have a list of tools. One of those is elements, and what Canva has done is created a set of specific elements that are perfect for building whiteboards. You can use things like sticky notes, diagrams, arrows, shapes, a lot of different things that are perfect for when you’re working with your students online.

Seamless Collaboration

One of the most important things about any online whiteboard is having your students collaborate, and with Canva’s new whiteboard, this is really easy. All you need to do is go to the top right-hand corner and share the whiteboard via their email address. Once a student has accepted the invitation and joined the whiteboard, they should appear in the top right-hand corner as either a profile picture or a circle with a letter inside. Now, each of these circles represents the students, and one of the best things about this is that if you click on their profile picture, then you’ll snap straight to that student’s work. So, if the student’s doing something naughty, you can find out straight away.

Getting students collaborating in an online class is fundamental, and so I’ve written another post on five tools and the ways you can get students collaborating right here.

Easy Sharing for Absent Students

The fifth and final feature that I really like about Canva’s new whiteboard is that you can download the whiteboards, so you can share them with your students if they were absent. A lot of the online whiteboards nowadays have this feature, but one thing I really like about Canva’s feature is that you can select a piece of the whiteboard and just download that. So, this is really useful because sometimes you don’t want to share the whole whiteboard with the student, as some of it might not be relevant, and you might just want to focus on the key areas. So, you can do this with Canva by just selecting the area that you’d like to share with the students and downloading it. You can then take this image and share it via, let’s say, Google Classroom or Class Dojo or send it directly by email.
